help to identity maker and age

Hi

I'm new here and what a great site, I am learning heaps from just reading old discussions.

I have this dish but I'm having trouble trying to find out who, what, where and when it was made. Why didn't they identify themselves better?

Thanks,
Maria

Hello Maria,

Welcome to the site. I'm far from expert on items such as this, but while searching at REPLACEMENTS, I found a number of makers who used this exact decal on their pieces. Here are some examples:

Adderly
Salisbury (hard to see, but think one of the decals is the same)
Listed as unknown
NORCREST
The last one is an importer. I know them mostly for items made in Japan, but it's possible they imported from England as well.

If you search the above site for "violets gold trim" you'll probably find many others.

The point is, that with only "Made in England" it might be impossible to ever find out who made it. I would guess (and it's only a guess) that it's not one of the better known makers of English porcelain/pottery, or they would have placed their mark on it. OR if it is, that it was made for an importer, who would have placed their own company paper label on it.

If you're trying to ID for selling, probably just the motif (violets) will be its selling point, as many people collect patterns with violets. You don't say what size it is, but I'm guessing a dresser (pin) tray? And my guess would be 1950s or later (again only a guess).

You might try posting on the eBay PGP Discussion Board. Start a thread with a title like -- "'Made in England' ceramic tray with Violets decoration" Post your pictures (make them a bit smaller -- like 400 pixels max) and be sure to give the dimensions. There are some experts there who might be able to offer some information.

Sorry I couldn't have been more help.

Kathleen
