This site is the latest version of a global effort to nail down obscure, illegible, incomplete, or otherwise unknown potter's marks appearing on ceramic pieces. Originating as an idea on the Pottery, Glass, and Porcelain Discussion Board hosted by eBay, it is well into its fourth year, still collecting unknown marks from the public and achieving a few identifications, too!
This site maintains three groups of forums. One is merely an area for introductory messages like this one. A second is devoted to the different types of unknown marks submitted and all identifications made. The third provides space to discuss the unidentified marks, chat about ceramics, and talk about any other topic of mutual interest.
You are welcome to browse the forums.
If you can identify a mark, please contact the Moderator or post in the Discussion section of this board. Marks identified in this manner will be moved to the proper thread and a public credit made in your name.
If you have a mark needing identification, post your request in the Discussion section of this board or on the eBay PGP Board. Please include clear photos of the mark, the ceramic piece itself, and the bottom.
To leave a post or a private message, please register as a member. (There is no charge for membership.) This will automatically enroll you as a sponsor of this site. Please feel free to choose a unique avatar from our extensive library. You will receive automatic notices of updates to the forums here. (If you don't want notices, you can opt out by editing your profile or notifying the Moderator.)
Hi, I found this site while looking for a mark on a piece of pottery. A couple of quick observations on the site layout as a newcomer. First the welcome to the geneal public was not obvious. I clicked the welcome link and got a list of listing. Clicking welcome should have brought up the welcome page. Not everyone wants to join in order to find out exactly what a site is all about. The welcome page should be in big, bold letters and should lead to the welcome page. Also info and links to the moderator's pages should be prominately displayed on the welcome page. Before joining this forum, people want to know who is behind the show and do they have experience in the subject matter. People don't want to come to a forum to ask about a mark and only to find a group of equally unknowledge people all asking "help". They want to know that an expert on the subject is there guiding things and ready to jump in with expert direction and knowledge. Anyway, I have joined and here I am another unknowledge persons asking about a mark on pottery.
