This mark is on a Toby Jug. It has the Staffordshire knot, a lion and griffin, a shield... Peter at 'figurines-sculpture.com', answered an inquire about a cookie jar with the same mark. He could not identify but thought it may have been a small company exporting to the USA. The cookie jar owner then reported finding a similar item on ebay and noted the cookie jar was imported from Japan in the '60s &'70s as a reproduction! I saw the mark again on a site 'worthpoint.com' in an article by Lisa Marion "Fake porcelain Marks: Recognizing Forged or imitation Marks or Ceramics" - just the picture and no explanation about it. The Toby was in my mothers collection, and that goes back to the '40s. We don't remember any additions to the collection of Tobys. All the other items are identified except this one! Any help would be appreciated.

The mark is indeed a montage and not real. Calling it "fake" would be incorrect as no such mark ever existed in the first place. What you have there is an item made in Japan by the Hachiya Brothers for the US company of A.A. Importing Co. Inc. from St. Louis/Missouri, a company known for various creative marks. You can even find examples of this mark together with the original A.A. stickers around.
